Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high‑level meeting on agriculture and exports, stressing that the sector is vital for Pakistan’s economic growth and stability. He urged both federal and provincial authorities to work together to boost per‑acre yields, adopt modern farming techniques, develop the livestock industry and increase the value‑added export of agricultural products.
## Export promotion and market diversification
The Prime Minister directed Pakistan’s commercial officers abroad to actively promote agricultural exports and ordered a media campaign to inform farmers about a new mobile app for crop monitoring. Export figures for the last fiscal year stood at US$5.18 billion, led by rice, fisheries, halal meat, potatoes, sesame, tobacco, mangoes and maize.
## Target markets and value‑chain development
The meeting identified China, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Gulf states as priority destinations. It proposed developing value chains and a Digital Farmers’ Diary‑Agri Stack to digitise farmer data, land records, soil and water testing. A Pakistan Good Agriculture Practices (Pak‑GAP) system will be introduced to encourage better farming methods.
## Financing and institutional support
The government plans to ease agricultural financing for exporters and activate the National Agriculture and Food Security Council, with chief ministers from all provinces participating. The Prime Minister highlighted that stronger coordination, modern technology, value addition and improved financing are essential for making Pakistani agriculture more competitive internationally.
