The Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC), in partnership with the Mango Research Institute (MRI) of Multan, organised a specialised workshop for mango growers, orchardists and related stakeholders at Lutfabad Mango Farms, Multan. The event aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge on scientific mango production, improved orchard management, disease prevention, and modern pruning methods.
## Technical Sessions
During the technical session, Dr Asif ur Rehman, Director of MRI, presented modern orchard management and production practices, while Dr Javed Iqbal discussed the benefits of scientific pruning. Engr Shehzad Ahmed, Additional Director General (AMRI), demonstrated the use of modern agricultural machinery for mechanical pruning, and Scientific Officer Abid Hameed Khan covered both manual and mechanical pruning techniques.
Renowned mango grower and exporter Major Tariq Khan (R) shared his field experience, and Dr Ghazali delivered a briefing on major mango diseases, their identification, prevention and effective control. Participants also raised field‑related issues which were addressed by the experts.
## Field Demonstration
A practical field demonstration of manual and mechanical pruning was conducted, allowing attendees to observe the application and benefits of the modern techniques discussed.
## PHDEC Initiatives
PHDEC briefed attendees on its ongoing programmes to strengthen the mango value chain, including certification support, mango bagging, technical training, quality improvement, market access, export promotion, post‑harvest management and value addition. Asif Tipu highlighted the role of the State‑of‑the‑Art (STS) system and its future prospects for the mango sector.
## Closing Remarks
Chief Executive Officer of PHDEC, Muhammad Naseer, described the workshop as a crucial step toward linking research with field practice. He reaffirmed PHDEC’s commitment to continued collaboration with stakeholders for sustainable mango sector development, quality enhancement, certification, market development and export promotion.
## Future Events
PHDEC invited participants to upcoming national and international exhibitions, including FoodAg Karachi (November 2026) and the Horticulture Expo Lahore (March 2027), to facilitate market access, buyer connections and business opportunities for Pakistani mangoes and other horticultural products.
