## Rupee Moves Higher

The local currency ended the trading day at 277.31 against the US dollar, edging up by Re0.01 from the previous close of 277.32. The modest appreciation continued the intra‑day trend of marginal gains.

## Global Monetary Context

The US dollar remained steady, while the Japanese yen hovered near a seven‑month high as markets priced in possible rate hikes from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. The European Central Bank recently raised rates and signalled further tightening, setting the backdrop for the Fed’s decision later in the week. The Bank of England was expected to hold rates steady.

## Oil Price Surge

Oil prices, a key driver of the rupee’s valuation, jumped more than 3% after renewed Houthi strikes in the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian attacks on vessels in the Gulf, raising concerns over supply. Brent crude rose to $107.82 per barrel and WTI to $103.22 per barrel.

## Market Implications

A stronger rupee eases the cost of imported inputs and foreign‑currency debt servicing for Pakistani companies. It also supports investor sentiment on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, particularly for sectors with significant import exposure or external financing.

## Outlook

Traders are betting on a Fed rate hike this week, with the CME FedWatch tool indicating an 86% probability. Continued volatility in oil markets and geopolitical tensions in the Gulf remain key risk factors for the rupee’s trajectory.
