Open on Business Recorder## Global copper market eases
Copper on the London Metal Exchange fell 0.5% to $14,641 per metric ton by 0945 GMT, after touching a record $14,779 the previous day. The pull‑back came as the Middle East conflict intensified, prompting investors to reassess the macro‑economic outlook.
## Drivers of the recent rally and the recent dip
The metal had surged 17% year‑to‑date, largely on expectations of U.S. tariffs that could tighten supply. Analyst Natalie Scott‑Gray of StoneX estimated that more than 1.2 million tonnes have entered the United States since Washington opened a Section 232 investigation in February, leaving global inventories at historically low levels.
## Oil price shock adds pressure
Oil breached the $100‑a‑barrel mark, hitting six‑week highs after a sharp escalation of attacks by Iran and the United States. ING commodities strategist Ewa Manthey said the oil surge fuels inflation worries and dampens demand outlook for industrial metals, prompting the copper correction.
## Related metal movements
While copper eased, LME zinc rose 0.3% to $4,032 a tonne, reflecting tighter physical markets. Aluminium, lead and nickel slipped modestly, whereas tin posted a 0.6% gain.
## Implications for Pakistan Copper Ltd (PPL)
Pakistan Copper Ltd, listed on the PSX, is directly exposed to global copper price trends. The recent retreat from record highs may pressure its earnings outlook and share price in the short term.
