Open on Business Recorder## Canadian delegation to attend Pakistan minerals forum
A delegation of Canadian mining companies, covering exploration, mining services, equipment and supply‑chain firms, is slated to participate in an upcoming minerals investment forum in Pakistan. The move follows a meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Canada’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Tarik Ali Khan, on Tuesday.
## Government priority and FIPA talks
Minister Jam Kamal highlighted mining as a priority sector for the government and welcomed the Canadian interest. Both sides agreed to speed up negotiations on the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA), with a new round expected in the first week of October. The High Commissioner described FIPA as a foundation for greater Canadian investment, offering legal protection, arbitration and dispute‑resolution mechanisms that would boost investor confidence and pave the way for joint ventures and broader trade.
## Broader cooperation areas
Beyond minerals, the talks covered clean and renewable energy, with the Canadian side presenting a hybrid renewable‑energy project in Jhimpir and solar solutions for Pakistani industries. Opportunities in dairy development, animal genetics, edible oils, fruit concentrates, food processing and value addition were also discussed. Both parties saw potential in expanding canola‑seed imports, local crushing, and export‑oriented processing.
## Aviation and trade linkage
Aviation and aerospace cooperation, including aircraft leasing and regional connectivity, were on the agenda. The importance of Pakistan International Airlines’ direct Toronto service was noted, given the sizable Pakistani diaspora in Canada. The minister emphasized Pakistan’s strategic location, market size and connectivity with China, Central Asia and the Middle East as attractive to Canadian investors.
## Outlook
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen economic ties, with the Canadian High Commissioner stressing Canada’s interest in diversifying trade and strengthening engagement with Asian markets.
